Questions A-P will create new cabinet-level department, fund $125 million for school construction, neighborhood development and cultural activities.

Baltimore, MD (October 20, 2008) – Mayor Sheila Dixon was joined by Baltimore City School Public School System CEO Dr. Andres Alonso to express support for Ballot Questions in the upcoming election. The questions, which include one charter amendment and 15 bond items, will be on the ballot on Election Day, November 4.

“Questions B through P are an investment and commitment in the future of Baltimore,” said Mayor Dixon. “If approved, they will help fund new initiatives that will make the city greener, and our development more sustainable.”

Ballot Questions B-P are for loan authorizations that total $125 million. The largest among them is a $43 million investment in school construction. The other items designate funding for community revitalization projects, the operation and management of the city’s parks and construction of new recreation centers, and loans for educational and cultural activities at some of Baltimore’s most popular attractions, including the Maryland Zoo and the Walters Art Museum.

The loans in Ballot Questions B-P are:

o B - School Loan - $43 million

o C – Enoch Pratt Free Library Loan - $3 million

o D – Community Development Loan - $30.5 million

o E – Economic Development Loan - $15.3 million

o F – Recreation & Parks Loan - $16 million

o G – Public Buildings Loan - $12.5 million

o H – Lyric Opera House Loan - $1 million

o I – Baltimore Museum of Art Loan - $750,000

o N – Walters Art Museum Loan - $350,000

o O – Maryland Zoo in Baltimore Loan - $300,000

o P – Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall Loan - $300,000

The charter amendment will establish the Department of General Services by transferring certain powers and duties from the existing Department of Public Works to the Department of General Services.

“This new cabinet-level department will enhance the maintenance and energy efficiency of the city fleet and buildings,” added Mayor Dixon. “The management of all city assets will become more cost-effective and accountable with the new Department of General Services.”
