Statement from Mayor Dixon on the Murder of Former Baltimore City Councilman Ken Harris

“Early this morning, I received word that my friend and colleague Ken Harris has been killed in a robbery in Northeast Baltimore. I was stunned by the news, and I feel a great personal sadness today.

I am saddened not only for myself over having lost a good friend, but for Ken’s wife, two children, and our City. Ken loved his family very much and I can only imagine what they are feeling today. Ken’s loved ones will be in my heart and my prayers. I hope they will be in the thoughts of everyone today.

Our City lost a committed advocate for people who didn’t always have a voice. When it came to young people, people losing their homes and people who just needed a little help – Ken was always there, speaking up for them and asking all of us to do what was right.

We have made great progress in the effort to make Baltimore a safer city, but as long as there are people in our communities who would take the life of a man like Ken Harris over a few dollars, we will have more work to do.

Today is a day for grief and sadness at the loss of a friend, but tomorrow will be a day of hard work and commitment to building a better city in honor of our friend.
