Baltimore, MD, July 20, 2007 - Capping of a month of local labor endorsements, Mayor Sheila Dixon gained the support of the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO Unions last night. AFL-CIO is the umbrella association for 189 local affiliated unions, representing 175,000 workers in the Baltimore Metropolitan area.

AFL-CIO President Ernie Grecco said "one of the reasons we endorsed Mayor Dixon was our full confidence in her ability to make this city a better place to live and work."

Grecco cited Mayor Dixon's accessibility as key. "One of the first things the mayor did in January was to reinstate the communication line between city unions and building trades on a monthly basis," he said.

Mayor Dixon is proud of the organization's support, saying, "Working together with the men and women of the AFL-CIO, I am proud to continue to move Baltimore forward. We must build the economy, create well-paying jobs, and expand opportunity for workers."

Baltimore Metropolitan AFL-CIO Council formally endorsed the mayor at a meeting last night at their hall at 2701 Patapsco Avenue.

A lifelong West Baltimore resident, Mayor Dixon is an active member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church and numerous community boards. Before assuming her current role, the mayor worked as a public school kindergarten teacher and led the City Council as its distinguished first female African American president.
