June 26, 2007- A week before the official filing deadline, Mayor Sheila Dixon today gains the support of one of the region’s strongest unions the MD/DC State Council of SEIU endorsement. This endorsement builds on the support of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and the United Auto Workers, who endorsed Mayor Dixon last week.

For the public service and early education members of SEIU, Mayor Dixon's background as a kindergarten teacher and Head Start educator has made the difference. Ruth Musicante, Treasurer of SEIU Local 500, said, "Sheila is the right choice for us. She's committed to education and so are we. We hope to continue working with the Mayor to secure more funding for under-financed, but valuable programs like Head Start in the city."

Upon receiving the full backing of the 30,000 members of the SEIU MD/DC State Council, Mayor Dixon said she "looked forward to working with all of SEIU on the issues which affect working families in Baltimore City."

MD DC Council of SEIU officially endorses Mayor Dixon at 4:45 PM today at 100 E. Pratt Street.

A lifelong West Baltimore resident, Mayor Dixon is an active member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church and numerous community boards. Before assuming her current role, the mayor worked as a public school kindergarten teacher and led the City Council as its distinguished first female African American president.
