Mayor Dixon on Improving Transportation

Improving public transit is a key part of my commitment to a cleaner, greener Baltimore. An improved transit system and higher transit ridership will reduce air pollution and reduce traffic congestion. Although the MTA is a State agency, it functions as a critical part of our City's transportation network. I am pleased that MTA and the Department of Transportation are meeting on an almost weekly basis to discuss and resolve issues like cleaning up bus stops and placing more shelters, allowing buses and light rail trains to move faster on City streets by the use of traffic signal priority and other technologies, and revising routes and schedules to meet the needs of modern Baltimore. Because funding for transit service comes exclusively from the State and federal government, it is unlikely that there be ever be full local control of our transit system. I believe that the best results will be forged by a close working relationship between City leaders and MTA.

With regard to the Baltimore Region Rail System Plan, I have expressed to Governor O'Malley that my highest transportation priority is the construction of the Red Line. Planning and design of this project must move expeditiously with a goal of putting the first "shovel in the ground" within the next two years. This is an aggressive schedule that will require cooperation from City agencies on traffic management, utility relocation, environmental issues, community outreach, etc. To this end, I will soon be appointing a Red Line Project Coordinator who will report to the Director of Transportation. This person will be charged with making sure that every City agency plays their part in advancing the Red Line project.
